Abstract: The translation of English legal documents into Spanish is not a simple task. Not only the specificity of the language, but also the lack of clarity to be found in the source texts, and the dijferent legal systems of the source and target cultures, make the "word-by-word" translation strategy an invalid means when a faithful and ejficient target text is to be produced. With regard to the level of clarity in this type of texts, extracts from a Law Report and a Statement of Clain are examined in detail in order to analyze the different elements that determine it.
