La vivienda de los inmigrantes indocumentados residentes en Canarias (España)

Abstract

El acceso a la vivienda es uno de los principales problemas al que se enfrentan los inmigrantes irregulares en España. El elevado precio de los alquileres, las dificultades económicas de los arribados y la situación jurídica en que se encuentran condicionan su situación residencial. A partir de estas premisas, en este artículo se pretende caracterizar las condiciones habitacionales de los inmigrantes indocumentados residentes en las Islas Canarias y analizar la relación que existe entre estas condiciones y las características del proceso migratorio. Con este fin, el análisis abarcó el estudio del tipo de vivienda, del régimen de tenencia y del tipo de hogar en que vive el inmigrante; y a su vez estos indicadores fueron relacionados con el nivel económico, el tiempo de estancia en la zona de acogida, la existencia de redes de apoyo y la nacionalidad de este colectivo. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que el modelo de alojamiento no difiere demasiado del de la comunidad local y de los inmigrantes asentados legalmente, debido a las peculiaridades del mercado de trabajo y de la vivienda en las Islas.

Access to housing is one of the main problems of the undocumented immigrants in Spain . The cost of renting, immigrants’ economic situation and legal status determine their residential situation. According to these statements, in this paper, we try to characterize the undocumented immigrants’ residential situation in the Canary Islands and to analyse the relationship between these conditions and the migratory process. Thus, the analysis involves the study of the kind of housing, the housing tenure and the type of household in which immigrants live. Besides, these indicators were related to the immigrants’ economic status, time of permanency in the islands, presence of support networks and the nationality. The results show that their housing conditions are not very different in relation to Spanish population and documented foreigners due to the peculiarities of the housing and job market of the Islands.
