In this paper, some thoughts on the most remarkable statements of Cicero and Horace on translation are discussed, together with a summary of Dryden´s work and an overview on the rules of decorum coming from France. Once the contributions from these authors are considered, achieving a better understanding of translation theory and praxis in the 18th century is easier. This is the point of departure of the next step of this essay, which deals with the phenomenon of translation in the Enlightenment, both in the United Kingdom and in Spain.en_US
