Abstract: Colloquial linguistic variety has traditionally received little attention in compulsory education, since formal use is normally preferred. Teachers, either because they think formal use is generally more prestigious or because they claim that spontaneous language is wrong, poor, slangy or even vulgar, do not pay much attention to the students' usual language. In the first part, this paper tries to define the colloquial variety and its basic pragmatic and linguistic traits in order to establish its definition and a conceptual starting point for the classroom practice; in the second part, the teaching principles of this linguistic modality will be discussed.
