In examining the spread of the Spanish language in the New World, we have found examples that prove that this Romance language incorporates new loan-words derived from indigenous languages. The new words have been carried down into Romance because of the preferences of speakers in Spanish reflected in their selection of derivational morphemes and lexemes. For some researchers, this process is to be understood as signifying the incorporation of indigenous loan-words into sixteenth-century Spanish texts, though there is still a lack of research data to show and support this procedure. This article aims to identify and categorize what these procedures were. Through extracting examples from numerous documents containing non-literary sixteenth-century texts, it is possible to specify which indigenous loan-words were used with more frequency and to determine the type of borrowings selected. The results presented here will be are useful to other researchers in identifying the processes at work which led to the incorporation of indigenous words into a modern Romance language. © 2015 Bulletin of Spanish Studies.
