The map is a didactic instrument, therefore having the main function of cartographically alphabetizing its users. For this reason, it is important to teach to understand the cartographic language and to build meanings from it. Currently, the use of digital maps as a location tool is widespread. University students of the Degree in Tourism, digital natives by generation, are mostly part of this group of users. Although the development of geographic thinking through the use of maps is a core competency and an instrument for obtaining other competencies in various subjects of this degree, the ability of students to interpret and produce maps is very limited. This fact justifies that, in the context of the Educational Innovation Project Learning to read maps to understand the territory that is carried out at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the ability of students to interpret maps is explored, with the aim of promote a correct understanding and management of cartography in the environment of territorial planning. To this end, a diagnosis has been made of the level of development of geographical thinking of the students of the compulsory subject of the fourth year Analysis and Tourism Planning of the Territory, which is taught in the Degree in Tourism of this university. The main methodological tool is a questionnaire structured in eight blocks oriented to the study of the localization, interpretation and relational analysis capacities of territorial variables, which has made it possible to accurately characterize the level of cartographic literacy of the students. Through this participatory action-research methodology, with a collaborative analysis of the questionnaires, it is intended to complement didactic changes that revert in the improvement of the cartographic capacity of the students and in a better academic performance of the students.
