Nuevos datos geocronológicos de los materiales volcánicos del ciclo magmático Roque Nublo en Gran Canaria (Islas Canarias, España)

Abstract

In Gran Canaria, the period between the Roque Nublo Cycle, Pliocene in age, and the Recent Cycle, Plio-Quaternary, has been defined traditionally as a period of volcanic inactivity. New K/Ar determinations carried out in this study on rocks belonging to the Roque Nublo Cycle gave ages between 4.6f0.2 and 2.7f0.1. These data together with stratigraphic and geochemical studies revealed that the last eruptions of phonolites of this cycle were synchronic with the first nephelinitic emissions of the Recent Cycle.
