El tejido brocado en el México virreinal: Telas ricas españolas, italianas y francesas

Abstract

La catalogación del tejido brocado o espolinado constituye una tarea que apenas se ha abordado debidamente a causa de su complejidad y dificultad intrínseca. A partir de la documentación de archivo y de la identificación de telas de seguro origen y datación, perseguimos definir las características técnicas y decorativas de los tejidos ricos y centros de fabricación españoles, italianos y franceses presentes en el mercado colonial durante los siglos XVI al XIX como base para futuras catalogaciones. Conservadas en diferentes iglesias y museos de México y las Islas Canarias, el caso sirve para ilustrar un comportamiento que, sin variaciones significativas, puede hacerse extensible al resto de Iberoamérica.

The cataloguing of brocade or sprung fabric has received scant proper attention, due to its complexity and intrinsic difficulty. Based on archival documents and fabrics whose origin and dating are well established, we aim to define the technical and decorative characteristics of expensive fabrics. This, coupled with the identification of Spanish, Italian and French manufacturing centres with a presence in the colonial market during the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries, can serve as a basis for future cataloguing. Preserved in various churches and museums in Mexico and the Canary Islands, this case illustrates a practice that, without significant variation, can be extended to the rest of Latin America.
