¿Algo más que una forma gráfica? Historia nacional y escritura visigótica en la paleografía española (1880-1940)

Abstract

Visigothic script, one of the “national» or «pre-Caroline” graphic forms, aroused the interest of Spanish and European palaeographers due to its originality, geographical diffusion and long chronology. These investigations were carried out in a context defined by the level of development of the discipline, but also by current ideas about the origins of Spain. This paper analyses the influence of the vision of the Visigothic kingdom and its medieval heritage on the orientation of palaeographic studies, as well as the meaning that this script acquired from each of the interpretations of national history.

La escritura visigótica, una de las formas gráficas «nacionales» o «precarolinas», suscitó el interés de los paleógrafos españoles y europeos por su originalidad, difusión geográfica y larga cronología. Estas investigaciones se realizaron en un contexto definido por el nivel de desarrollo de la disciplina, pero también por las ideas vigentes sobre los orígenes de España. Este trabajo analiza la influencia de la visión del reino visigodo y de su herencia medieval en la orientación de los estudios paleográficos, así como el sentido que adquiría esta escritura desde cada una de las interpretaciones de la historia nacional.
