Depresión y sufrimiento humano: pasado, presente y futuro

Abstract

El pasado, presente y futuro de la depresión y del sufrimiento humano son abordados en este artículo. El autor analiza los nombres dados en la historia a la depresión, tales como melancolía y acedia, investigando su alcance, y haciendo hincapié en el aumento de pacientes registrado en las áreas de salud mental a raíz de la pandemia de coronavirus. La depresión hace referencia hoy al síndrome de “hundimiento vital”, debido a la incidencia epidemiológica de esta enfermedad que padece buena parte de la humanidad. Una enfermedad que infunde respeto, toda vez que comporta un enorme sufrimiento, ubicada como en el fondo de un pozo o en un túnel oscuro del que no se alcanza a ver la salida.

The past, present and future of depression and human suffering are addressed in this article. The author analyzes the names given to depression in history, such as melancholia and acedia, investigating its range, and emphasizing the increase in patients registered in mental health areas because of the coronavirus pandemic. In our days depression refers to the “vital collapse” syndrome, due to the epidemiological incidence of this disease that a large part of humanity suffers from. A disease that inspires respect, since it entails enormous suffering, located as if at the bottom of a well or in a dark tunnel from which one cannot see the exit.
