Prepararse para morir en la Sevilla bajomedieval. Testamentos y dotaciones de capellanía (1371–1474)

Abstract

Este artículo ofrece un acercamiento a la percepción y actitudes ante la muerte de los sevillanos entre finales del siglo XIV y mediados del siglo XV a través del análisis de las fórmulas empleadas en los testamentos y dotaciones de capellanías conservados en varios archivos de la ciudad, atendiendo especialmente a dos partes: las invocaciones, preámbulos y profesiones de fe que aparecen al principio de los testamentos; y las mandas religiosas relacionadas con los oficios religiosos a realizar por sus almas, tanto las honras fúnebres como los sufragios a perpetuidad, y otras limosnas pías.

This paper examines perceptions, attitudes and preparations for death in Seville between the end of the 14th and middle of the 15th centuries. It does so by analysing the formulas used in testaments and endowments preserved in several archives of the city, paying special attention to two parts: the invocations, preambles and professions of faith at the start of testaments; and the funeral rites and various religious services in memory of the deceased, as well as other pious legacies.
