Manipulación contable y propiedad familiar

Abstract

El trabajo analiza la relación entre la estructura de propiedad y las prácticas de manipulación contable (earnings management) de las empresas no financieras cotizadas españolas (familiares y no familiares) en el periodo 1997- 2003. Para las empresas no familiares los resultados alcanzados muestran, en consonancia con el efecto atrincheramiento, una relación positiva entre la participación en los derechos de voto del principal accionista y la manipulación contable ejercida por la dirección. Sin embargo, para el caso de las empresas familiares, se aprecia que tal incidencia es negativa, lo cual es consistente con los efectos reputación/vinculación a largo plazo. De otra parte, no se obtienen resultados estadísticamente significativos en cuanto a la incidencia de la divergencia propiedad-control sobre la manipulación contable

This study examines the relationship between the ownership structure of listed non-financial Spanish (family and non-family) companies and earnings management over a seven-year period (1997-2003). In non-family firms, the results show, according to entrenchment effect, a positive relationship between the level of voting rights of the controlling shareholder and the magnitude of earnings management. Nevertheless, that relationship is negative in family firms, consistent with the reputation/long-term presence effect. However, no statistically significant results regarding the effect of ownership-control divergence on earnings management are obtained
