La defensa de La Palma durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial

Abstract

El objetivo de este artículo consiste en investigar el refuerzo de la defensa de La Palma durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, a partir de fuentes primarias procedentes de los archivos militares españoles. Estas fuentes han permitido obtener una serie de conclusiones, entre las que destacan las siguientes. Primero, los antecedentes de las medidas aplicadas en aquellos años se sitúan a finales del siglo XIX. Segundo, la importancia estratégica de La Palma sólo superó a La Gomera y El Hierro, por lo que la intensidad del esfuerzo realizado fue menor que en el resto de las islas. Tercero, el refuerzo de las defensas fue impulsado por la no beligerancia española y limitado por la escasez de armamento moderno. Por último, este esfuerzo concluyó en 1943, sin haber completado las necesidades defensivas de la isla.

The aim of this article is to research the reinforcement of the defenses of La Palma in the Sec­ond World War, using the primary sources of Spanish military archives. These sources have allowed us to reach a series of conclusions, some of the most important of which are the following. First, there are precedents of the measures taken in those years that date back to the end of the XIXth century. Second, the strategic value of La Palma was not great, only in excess of La Gomera and El Hierro, and therefore the intensity of the efforts deployed were inferior to the rest of the islands. Third, the reinforcement of the de­fenses was triggered largely by the Spanish policy of non-belligerence and limited by the lack of modern arms. Last but not least, this effort was brought to a close in 1943, without the defense requirements of the island being covered.
