Lorenzo Guesquier: un intérprete singular en los procesos inquisitoriales

Abstract

El presente artículo analiza la intervención del comerciante flamenco Lorenzo Guesquier como intérprete de la Inquisición en el Tribunal de Canarias en un periodo de excepcional actividad inquisitorial contra contrabandistas herejes neerlandeses: 1592-1597. Tras contextualizar el momento y el escenario lingüístico en torno a los más de 50 procesos en los que interpretó Guesquier, se examina su trabajo de mediación en las fases procesales y numerosas situaciones originadas marginalmente. Asimismo se informa de otros intérpretes que colaboraron con Guesquier y la compensación que este obtuvo por su dedicación al Tribunal.

This This article analyzes the work of the Flemish trader Lorenzo Guesquier as an interpreter for the Inquisition at the Tribunal of the Canaries from 1592 to 1597, when persecution focused to an exceptional degree on the protestant smugglers from the Netherlands. The historical and linguistic background are given for the more than 50 trials where Guesquier intervened as interpreter and his mediation work is evaluated both in the trials and the surrounding situations given. Detail is also given of other interpreters who collaborated with Guesquier including the compensation that the latter received for his devoted work with the Tribunal.
