Escribir para resistir. Un relato alternativo a través del diario en prisión del síndico personero de Tenerife, don Carlos Soler Carreño (1790)

Abstract

La persecución política y personal sufrida por el síndico personero don Carlos Soler Carreño por parte de la oligarquía concejil de Tenerife fue tratada hace años por Noreña Salto y Núñez Pestano. Con este artículo pretendemos ir más allá del conflicto político y acercarnos a los hechos siguiendo el relato personal de su protagonista. Durante su encierro en prisión durante casi un año, don Carlos Soler se las ingenió para anotar en papeles su versión de los hechos, la violencia sufrida, su miedo fundado a perder la vida y la reputación pública y su denuncia de las insalubres condiciones de las prisiones, dando lugar a un texto que nos acerca de primera mano no sólo al conflicto en sí sino también a la mentalidad ilustrada de un reformador caído en desgracia.

The political and personal persecution suffered by the syndic Don Carlos Soler Carreño at the hands of the oligarchic council of Tenerife was treated years ago by Noreña Salto and Núñez Pestano. With this article we want to go beyond the political conflict and approach the facts by following the personal story of its protagonist. During almost a year of incarceration, Soler Carreño managed to capture in his writings his point of view about the violence he suffered, his fear of losing his life or his reputation, and the deplorable conditions of prisons during the Ancient Regime. His diary provides as much insight into the conflict itself as it does into the Enlightenment mentality of a disgraced reformer.
