Evolution of land transport in the Canary Islands since the nineteentl

Abstract

Se presenta un trabajo de investigación histórica documental sobre los modos tradicionales de transporte interior, y su evolución en los dos últimos siglos, en los territorios insulares canarios caracterizados por su aislamiento geográfico de las redes viarias continentales. En él se estudia la organización y actividad del transporte terrestre en relación con los medios técnicos muy rudimentarios de épocas pasadas y las dificultades impuestas por el medio físico, pero de relevante importancia en el desarrollo social y económico de las sociedades isleñas. Los transportes de herradura mediante animales de carga y de tiro han constituido tradicionalmente la base de los modos empleados para el transporte terrestre. También los transportes colectivos se inician con vehículos de tracción animal hasta la aparición de los primeros tranvías urbanos y los vehículos automóviles.

The article presents a historical and documental study of traditional modes of transport in inland areas of the Canary islands and their evolution over the last two centuries. These inland areas being characterised by their geographic isolation from continental road networks. The study considers the activity and organisation of land transport in accordance with the very rudimentary technical means available in past times and the difficulties imposed by the terrain and underlines the importance this had on the social and economical development of the island societies. Pack and draft animals have traditionally served as the mainstay of land transport on the islands and collective transport also relied on draft animals in its early stages until the appearance of the first urban trams and automobiles.
