Abstract: Ramón José de Arce, Francisco Javier Mier y Campillo and Jerónimo Castillón y Salas were the last General Inquisitors. These three men headed the Spanish Inquisition during a period in which they seemed destined to fail. This article discusses the various problems they faced and the solutions they advocated.
