Abstract: In this paper the authors study the work of the Spaniard Antonio Portuondo on the theory of infinitesimals during the revival of this theory in the decade 1870-1880. An analysis of the book Ensayo sobre el infinito is the guiding line linking Cauchy and Nonstandard Analysis.
