In this article, the authors explain the real situation of schools in the Canary Islands during the Illustration, a movement whose main purpose was to provide education to the population. As it happened in other aspects, this was in fact a reason why the initiative did not work and the majority of the people, mainly the popular classes, and especially women, did not have access to education, thus being kept apart from intellectual lite. The article includes maps of the places that had a schoolhouse (when data are available) in an attempt to explain the reasons for this movement, always bearing in mind the existing social and economic structure as well as the implication of the different powers in these aspects.en
