Abstract: This study assessed the modifications in the properties of compressed polylactic acid (PLA) composites obtained with 20% of two different natural fibers, mainly focusing on the alterations due to a bio-disintegration process. Thermal properties (melting temperature and crystallinity degree), morphology (via optical microscopy), and chemical changes (by Fourier Transformed lnfrared spectroscopy) were studied. The results confirmed that PLA based biocomposites with all tested natural fibers are biodegradable. The behavior of the materials under marine conditions was also evaluated, although long-duration tests need to be carried out.
