Abstract: The life history of the painted conber, Serranus scriba, from the Canary Islands was studied in terms of sexuality, reproduction, age, and growth. This species is a functional simultaneous hermaphodite. Individuals reached 50% maturity at 17.3 cm TL. Spawning season occurs from January to September with a peak in June. Age range was 2-11 years for fish measuring 15.0-24.9 cm TL. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were also determined.
