The relationship between history and literature has been a recurring topic in historical studies ever since Hayden White's promulgation of constructivist approaches. Gabrielle Spiegel has synthesized and evaluated both the impact of constructivism and the effects of an "empiricist turn" which has sometimes taken an anti-theoretical and uncritical bent. The present study focuses on post-Alphonsine historiography (a set of Castilian chronicles produced between 1270 and 1320), which is of special interest given the methodological reach of both empiricism and historiographical constructivism within the field of Hispanic medievalism. |
