Tourism companies operate in an increasingly competitive environment, where internationalisation becomes a tool in the search for improved positioning and image. Similarly, the international success of the sector is also considered an indicator of the effectiveness of promotional strategies and promotion of destinations to companies. In this sense, studies on internationalisation today are not sufficient to support destinations in terms of tourism policy, since they lack an adequate segmentation of companies in terms of type and origin. With the information provided by 60 company managers dedicated to nautical tourism, this article focuses on analysing the differences in the export profile of companies located in six competing nautical destinations. The study focuses on the Macaronesia region, Europe’s leading destination for nautical activities. The data allow us to know the current conditions and limitations to the internationalisation of the sector in each of the destinations analysed, while contributing also to the elaboration of a series of recommendations on incentive policies that are better adapted to each context on an island and regional scale. The study also identifies the areas where destinations can work together, with the challenge that this represents for tourism management.en_US
