Valentine Penrose y Maud Westerdahl: las huellas de una amistad en el Surrealismo

Abstract

La poeta Valentine Penrose (Gascuña, 1898-East Sussex, 1978) y la artista Maud esterdahl (Limoges, 1921-Madrid, 1991) mantuvieron una estrecha amistad a lo largo de su vida. Sin embargo, la importancia que tuvo esta amistad, que propició entre otras cosas la estancia de Valentine Penrose en Tenerife (1957), ha quedado olvidada debido a las circunstancias de la época, marcadas por la tendencia a olvidar el papel de mujeres activas en la cultura, como fue el caso de Maud Westerdahl. Este artículo pretende visibilizar la amistad entre estas dos creadoras surrealistas y la impronta que dejó en varios poemas de Valentine Penrose, así como en la obra de Maud Westerdahl “Minotauro azul”

The poet Valentine Penrose (Gascony, 1898. East Sussex, 1978) and the artist Maud Westerdahl (Limoges, 1921- Madrid ,1991) were long-life friends. The importance of this friendship which made possible the stay of Valentine Penrose in Tenerife in 1957, has been forgotten, probably due to the circumstances of the second half of the past century, as well as the fact that the role of active women in culture was always invalidated. Such was the case for Maud Westerdahl. This article tries to make visible the friendship between two surrealist female artists, as well as its imprint in Valentine Penrose`s Tenerife poems and Maud Westerdahl`s enamel “Minotauro azul”
