O Tabaco nos Impérios Ibéricos desde os Arquipélagos Atlânticos nos séculos XVII-XIX. Uma visão comparada

Abstract

O monopólio de tabaco português, cuja criação é paralela à do estanco espanhol, esteve sempre restringido ao território peninsular e aos arquipélagos do Atlântico médio, estando quase toda a sua história nas mãos de arrendadores (“Mercantilismo partilhado”), o que difere do que se passou em Espanha. As Ilhas Canárias também estiveram integradas desde o princípio no estanco espanhol, em regime de arrendamento até 1717 e posteriormente em administração direta. Nesta comunicação vamos estabelecer as linhas mestras da economia tabaqueira entre os séculos XVII-XIX em ambos os arquipélagos, tendo muito presente o contexto da história atlântica e das relações com o Brasil e com as Antilhas.

The monopoly of Portuguese tobacco, whose creation is parallel to that of the Spanish, was always restricted to the main land and to the two archipelagos of the mid-Atlantic, with almost all its history in the hands of landlords (“Shared Mercantilism”), unlike what happened in Spain. The Canary Islands were also integrated from the beginning into the Spanish tobacco income, under lease until 1717 and subsequently in administration. In this communication we will try to establish the main lines of the tobacco economy from the 17th-19th century in both archipelagos, bearing in mind the context of Atlantic history and relations with Brazil and the Antilles.
