Internal and external network: do academic researchers work well together to increase their creativity?

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the role of the internal and external relationships of academic researchers and its effect on their creative outcomes. In order to achieve this goal, an empirical study is carried out analysing the internal and external ties of 314 researchers belonging to 118 research groups from a Spanish university from 2006 to 2010. The results show that both researchers’ internal and external networks have a positive and significant influence on their scientific performance through the number of published articles during the period of study. Moreover, the results reveal how researchers’ internal and external networks complement each other. When researchers have a weak internal network, stronger external ties help them to increase their scientific performance and vice versa.

Esta investigación tiene como objetivo analizar el papel de las relaciones internas y externas de los investigadores académicos y su efecto en sus resultados creativos. Con el fin de lograr este objetivo, se realiza un estudio empírico de las relaciones internas y externas de 314 investigadores pertenecientes a 118 grupos de investigación de una universidad española entre 2006 y 2010. Los resultados muestran que tanto las redes internas como las externas de los investigadores tienen una influencia positiva y significativa en su rendimiento científico a través del número de artículos publicados durante el período de estudio. Por otra parte, los resultados ponen de manifiesto cómo las redes internas y externas de los investigadores se complementan entre sí. Cuando los investigadores tienen una red interna débil, la existencia de vínculos externos más fuertes les ayudar a aumentar su rendimiento científico y viceversa.
