The Canary Islands’ beaches are essential elements of the economic sector of the islands, and hence it is essential to know their geological-geomophological characteristics. However, there are not studies covering geological-sedimentological characterization of these beaches. The aim of this paper is to present a first methodological proposal, based on indicators, to estimate the geomorphological sensitivity of the Canarian beaches. This sensitivity, defined as the response of the beach system to modeling efforts, is assessed by means of a checklist of 12 variables related to: 1) the geomorphological-sedimentological susceptibility, or intrinsic robustness, of one system against the modelers agents (natural and anthropogenic) to which it is exposed; and 2) the resilience, or ability of the system to absorb resiliently the impacts occurring with time. These variables have been valued for 34 beaches of GranCanaria. The results show that the geomorphological-sedimentological susceptibility generally is moderate, while theresilience is quite variable. Also there are other common remarkable elements that provide strength (modal statesintermediate and dissipative, lithic origin of materials and sediment with grain size >2Φ) and weakness (absence ofcoastal dunes and/or beachrocks and low width of the intertidal zone).en_US
