Abstract: The treatment of chronic otitis media is difficult because of the low concentrations of antimicrobial agents achieved in ear tissue and the high rates of resistance of some frequently involved organisms. We select 5 groups of 25 patients with chronic otitis media. We heated the Group 1 with local 0.5% ciprofloxacin, Group 2 with local 0.2% ciprofloxacin, Group 3 with oral ciprofloxacin (500 mg /12 hours for 7 days), Group 4 with 0.2% local ciprofloxacin plus oral ciprofloxacin (500 mg /12 hours for 7 days), and Group 5 was the control group. The sensitivity of the microorganisms was tested by agar dilution method, according to NCCLS standards. The results obtained show that local ciprofloxacin is an effective treatment for ear infections. The 0.2% regimen achieves results similar to the 0.5% regimen, with lower doses of antibiotic. No difference was found when local ciprofloxacin was used alone or with an oral regimen associated.
