Abstract: Abalone is an herbivorous gastropod that eats mainly seaweeds. Abalone growth is extremely low, diet is therefore very important and it has been shown that different diets produce different growth rates and often varies with size and age. A major limiting factor to expansion of abalone cultivation is the ready and economic availability of suitable food. The use of prepared feed can be practical since formulation can be manipulated to obtain an optimum nutritional value. In the frame of European SUDEVAB project, our current investigation is directed at developing a sustainable, ecobased, low-cost artificial diet based on vegetable sources which match abalone nutritional requirements. In order to achieve this objective, the aim of this study was to review abalone nutritional requirements and feeding practices.
