Abstract: In view of the depleted natural population of the Canarian mussel Perna perna L., mainly due to overfishing and a high demand on the local market, its culture, could be a further challenge for local aquaculture. Besides, there is a public interest in developing the culture techniques of this species to contribute to the recovery of wild populations. A pilot study asessing the feasibility of mussel culture on longline system, at sea, is being developed on the island of Fuerteventura (Canary Islands). An environment impact study, described in the present communication, has been realized according to environmental laws. The aim of this study is to contribute to the knowledge of the potential environmental impacts of mussel culture to help stakeholders in the hypothetical development of this culture in the Canary Islands.
