We have studied 42 Spanish Cystic Fibrosis patients during a two year period. 452 strains of P. aeruginosa were isolated. Mucoid morphotype was the most frequent (32.3 %) followed by rough (20.5 %), dwarf (17.4 %), gelatinous (12.2 %), metallic (10.5 %) and enterobacter-like (7.1 %). Serogroup O:6 and polyagglutinable strains were predominant. By serotyping and phage typing we found a maximum of two strains which colonize chronically the lungs. Norfloxacin, tobramycin, ceftazidime and imipenem were the most active antimicrobial agent. The mucoid and metallic strains were more susceptible to antibiotics than the other morphotypes. We have also investigated the effect of iron upon the different morphotypes of P. aeruginosa and we found that the iron deprivation induces in some cases the mucoid morphotype.en_US
