Diagnosis of Canine Hypothyroid and Feline Hyperthyroid Hormone values of 351 dogs and 503 cats were determined to evaluate the usefulness of new tests for the diagnosis of thyroid diseases in dogs and cats (free thyroxine by dialysis (FT4) and thyrotropin in dogs and FT4 in cats). Of the 48 hypothyroid dogs, 87.5%, 13.0% and 97.9% had low total thyroxine (TT4), total triiodothyronine (TT3) and FT4, respectively. High thyrotropin concentration was found in 79.2% of these dogs. Of the 279 hyperthyroid cats, 87.4%, 85.1% and 96.8% had high TT4, TT3 and FT4. The results of this study suggest that serum free T4 by dialysis is the best single test to diagnose hypothyroidism in dogs and thyrotropin determination is also of value. Serum free T4 by dialysis is useful for the diagnosis of feline hyperthyroidism, especially in cats in which TT4 values are normal or slightly high. |
