España en la Primera Guerra Mundial: política exterior, neutralidad y algunos apuntes sobre Canarias

Abstract

Este artículo analiza la política exterior de España en el contexto de la Gran Guerra, con una neutralidad determinada por el factor geográfico, las relaciones comerciales, la orientación internacional de preguerra, así como la situación del Ejército y el conflicto interior. Veremos cómo la guerra económica revalorizó la posición estratégica de España y ayudó a mantener su neutralidad, pues para esa guerra económica España era más útil para la Entente como neutral. En ese mantenimiento de la neutralidad destacaremos igualmente la actitud mediadora de Alfonso XIII. Podemos hablar, por tanto, de distintas neutralidades, esbozando el papel de los actores sobre el terreno, con referencia especial a los embajadores. Finalmente, introducimos algunos apuntes sobre el papel de Canarias como piedra de toque de las limitaciones, condicionantes y preocupaciones de esta política exterior de España, las fases de su neutralidad y las presiones y conflictos a los que ésta se vio sometida

This article analyzes the foreign policy of Spain in the context of the Great War, with a neutrality determined by the geographical factor, trade relations, the pre war international orientation and the situation of the army and the inner conflict. We’ll see how the economic war revalued the strategic position of Spain and helped to maintain its neu-trality, because in this economic war Spain was more useful to the Entente as neutral. In the maintenance of neutrality we also highlight the mediating attitude of Alfonso XIII. We can speak, therefore, of different neutralities, outlining the role of actors on the ground, with special reference to the ambassadors. Finally, we introduce some notes on the role of the Canary Islands as a touchstone of the limitations, conditions and concerns of the foreign policy of Spain, the phases of its neutrality and the pressures and conflicts to which it was subjected.
