The evaluation is based in the competitiveness of the complete intermodal chain, that is the capillary hauls and trunk hauls (maritime leg) jointly analyzed against the alternative of trucking. The method includes, firstly, the calculation of indexes of time and cost for every possible intermodal route by assuming ‘many-to-many’ transport networks. Secondly, a multi-criteria decision matrix is developed and evaluated. Monte Carlo simulation is applied considering the reliability of the values assumed to construct the decision matrix, enabling meeting a specified risk level accepted by decision makers. This chapter presents an application of this multi-criteria decision method to intermodal transport between member states of the European Union. However, aware of the interest in the short sea shipping of regions where the application of the method is difficult due to the lack of information, this chapter also includes a simplified method with an application case to the eastern African coast. | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/10553/71341 | ISBN: | 978-0367232429 | DOI: | 10.4324/9780429278907-8 | Source: | Short Sea Shipping in the Age of Sustainable Development and Information Technology / Tiago A.
