dc.description.abstract | The coastal dune field of Maspalomas (Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain) has undergone a considerable transformation as a result of tourist-related activities over recent decades. The environmental consequences of these activities include the reduction of sedimentary contributions. This is, due in part to the presence of buildings forming a barrier which prevent sediments from reaching the interior of the system, and to an increase in vegetation colonisation. This article examines the relationship between the formation of deflation surfaces, as a result of the sedimentary deficit, and the evolution of vegetation colonisation between 1996 and 2004.The results obtained indicate that the increase in vegetation coverage is linked to the formation of deflation surfaces, provided that this phenomenon also coincides with precipitation figures above the annual average for the area (76.2 mm) over consecutive years. | - |
