Explicación jerárquica de la manifestación del género

Abstract

La manifestación del género, tanto en su vertiente de categoría gramatical como entendido como signo de identidad sexual, está vinculada a jerarquías implicacionales que predicen que los términos con referentes masculinos precederán preferiblemente a los femeninos en un grupo nominal. Dicha predicción nos ha motivado a estudiar la incidencia de la jerarquía de estatus social (Allan, 1987) en relación con expresiones que hacen referencia a la madre en la lengua inglesa, y observar si el papel central de la madre en nuestras vidas se refleja en la lengua apareciendo dichos términos antes en la secuencia lineal de los constituyentes de un grupo nominal en el que también intervienen otros masculinos, en cuyo caso habría que recurrir a otro tipo de parámetros que explicasen la alteración de dicha jerarquía.

The expression of gender, conceived both as a grammatical category and as a sign of sexual identity, is linked to hierarchies which predict that terms with a male referent will preferably precede those with female reference within the same noun phrase. Based on this prediction, this paper aims to study the incidence of the social status hierarchy (Allan, 1987) in connection with expressions which make reference to the mother in the English language, and to observe if the central role of mothers in our lives is reflected by placing such terms first in a linear sequence in which male terms are also found (e.g. mum and dad), in which case it would be necessary to study the violation of the expected unmarked order in relation to other parameters.
