El rancho de ánimas de Teror: repertorio de textos

Abstract

El «Rancho de Ánimas de Teror» es una manifestación de religiosidad popular basada en el canto de textos tradicionales o improvisados en favor de las ánimas de los difuntos en la comarca de Teror, en la isla de Gran Canaria. Para ello recorren cada año los distintos pagos del municipio cantando en las casas en donde ha habido un fallecimiento reciente y el «rancho» ha sido invitado para ello. Es un testimonio vivo de la creencia en el Purgatorio y en el poder liberador de la oración, instituidos como dogma de la Iglesia a partir del Concilio de Trento, y que antiguamente fueron comunes en todas las islas del archipiélago canario. Lo más característico del «rancho» es la música y los instrumentos con que se acompañan, así como el repertorio de textos que cantan, únicos en el panorama de la música de tradición oral en España.

The 'Rancho de Ánimas' is a traditional popular religious expression based on the singing of traditional or improvised texts in aid of the souls of the dead in the región of Teror, gran Canaria. Every year, they go all over the different parts of the town and sing in all those houses where there has been a recent death and where the 'rancho' has been invited to particípate. The 'Rancho' provides living testimony of the belief in the existence of purgatory and the liberating power of prayer, established as a Román Catholic dogma after the Council of Trent. Many years ago this was a common tradition in all the Canary Islands. The most characteristic feature of the 'rancho' is the music and the Instruments used, as well as the repertoire of texts sung, the only one of its kind in the oral tradition od music in Spain.
