Once the conquest of the Canary Islands was completed, the land was distributed among the conquerors and settlers, although the system by which this was carried out differed from one island to the next. In the islands subject to lords of the land (señoriales), the lord handed over the land via a document called a merced (favour) whereas on the islands dependent on, the Crown (realengas), the governors did so by royal delegation. Although it has been said that the systems were similar, there were substantial differences that we will attempt to uncover here in this study. |
