A significant population of Salvinia molesta has been found in Gran Canaria. This citation is the first in the Canary Islands and Spain. This species is listed as of great invasive potential, and it appears in several national and international lists as one of the most dangerous invasive plants in the world. In this paper, we study its habitat in Gran Canaria, and its differences with respect to Salvinia natans (the only species of the genus cited so far in the Canaries), and to other species within the Salvinia auriculata group, to which it belongs. Finally, its invasive potential in the island is discussed.
