The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was born in 1989 according to the Canary Island Parlamentary law which allowed for the reorganization of the two Universities in this Region: The existing University of La Laguna on the Island of Tenerife and the newly created University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria situated on the island of Gran Canaria. The struggle for the creation of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria became the reason for the well-known first university dispute between the two largest Islands in the Canary Island Region: Tenerife and Gran Canaria islands. This dispute was first resolved with the creation of the San Agustin University in La Laguna, Tenerife, which remained open for close to four years, followed by the creation of the San Fernando Literary University which was also closed down after a while giving way for the creation of the today existing University of La Laguna. Due to this fact, Gran Canaria reivindicated its right to also have its own University which finally was created to start the Academic Year 1989-1980. The numerous students who actually attend this University and the great variety of studies which offers is the evident proof that its creation was the right decision to take.en_US
