Submarinos en Canarias durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial

Abstract

El objetivo del artículo es estudiar uno de los hechos más destacados de la historia de Canarias durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial: las actividades de los submarinos pertenecientes a las potencias beligerantes. Es conocida la existencia de submarinos alemanes en el archipiélago, pero no que este formaba parte de la zona de operaciones asignada a los submarinos italianos o que los primeros submarinos vistos en estas islas durante aquellos años fueron franceses. Estas cuestiones han sido tratadas por separado o de forma tangencial, pero falta una visión de conjunto que contribuya a desmitificar este asunto. Con este fin y a partir de fuentes archivísticas españolas y extranjeras, el artículo analiza la presencia de submarinos franceses, las operaciones de los submarinos italianos y el abastecimiento de los U-Boote alemanes.

The aim of this article is to study one of the most outstanding historical facts in the history of the Canary Islands during the Second World War: the activities of the submarines of the belligerent powers. It’s known the existence of German submarines in the archipelago, but it’s not realized that this one was included in war zone for the Italian submarines, or that the first submarines sighted there in those years were French. These questions have been considered as a secondary issue or separately, but there is a lack of an overview, to demystify this subject. For this reason and working from Spanish and foreign sources, this article analyses the presence of French submarines, the operations of the Italian submarines, and the supply of the German U-boats.
