La red de estancos de tabaco en América y la Real Hacienda durante la segunda mitad del XVIII

Abstract

En este capítulo se realiza una valoración general de la extensión del monopolio de tabaco a los territorios indianos. Entre sus aportaciones hay que resaltar que éstos se localizaron en lugares estratégicos (donde podían producir mayores ingresos). En segundo lugar que aportaron ingresos que se gastaron in situ y sirvieron igualmente para enjugar los déficits de la hacienda metropolitana. Señalamos igualmente el carácter de proveedor imperial del tabaco cubano. Un momento crítico fue la guerra de 1779-1783 que, entre otras cosas, significó que los intendentes tuvieran que dirigir los ingresos del estanco con el fin de atender los gastos de defensa en la propia América.

The overall goal of this chapter is to make a general assessment of the extent of the tobacco monopoly to the Indian territories. In one hand we must appoint that all happened in strategic locations (where they could generate higher yields). On the other hand, the income was a contribution spent locally, although used to staunch the deficits of the metropolitan state finances. The character of imperial supplier of the Cuban tobacco should also be underlined. A critical moment was the war of 1779-1783. Among other things, the intendants feel obliged to redirect the revenues of the tobacco to cover the expenses of defense in America itself.
