El sentido cubista de Álvaro Siza (I). El Centro Gallego de Arte Contemporáneo, Santiago de Compostela, España (1988-1999)

Abstract

El análisis y la interpretación del proyecto y la obra del Centro Gallego de Arte Contemporáneo y su entorno, permite tomar conciencia del modo de hacer arquitectura de Álvaro Siza. A través del estudio de esta obra se desvela la capacidad que tiene Siza para materializar una arquitectura integrada en la naturaleza. Su búsqueda incesante de una expresión única en el proceso de fragmentación de la forma arquitectónica y del espacio envolvente hay que encuadrarla, sobre todo, en la cultura plástica del cubismo, fundamentalmente del cubismo analítico de Picasso y Braque, como síntesis que supera la oposición figura-fondo.

Analysing and interpreting the design and construction of the Galician Centre of Contemporary Art (CGAC) and its surroundings enables us to understand and appreciate Álvaro Siza’s approach to architecture. A careful study of this work reveals Siza’s ability to give form to architecture that blends with its natural environs. His ceaseless search for unique expression through the fragmentation of architectural form and its surrounding space should, above all, be framed within the artistic movement of Cubism, primarily within the Analytical Cubism of Picasso and Braque: a synthesis that transcends the opposition of figure and background.
