Los Progymnasmata Rhetorica Summam Totius Artis Breuiter Complectentia de Joannes Telgius: una adaptación de la Rhetorica ad Herennium para las escuelas humanistas holandesas

Abstract

Los Progymnasmata Rhetorica Summam Totius Artis Breuiter Complectentia de Joannes Telgius fueron editados en Colonia, en 1561. La obra es un manual de iniciación al aprendizaje de la retórica dedicado a un estudiante de jurisprudencia. Su principal peculiaridad es la presencia de ejemplos para ilustrar todos los puntos de la preceptiva que están tomados, asegura, de los discursos de Cicerón, pero se sirve también de otros textos. Igualmente, indica que la fuente principal de su teoría retórica es la Rhetorica ad Herennium, pero no es la única, pues los Progymnasmata Rhetorica se caracterizan por su sincretismo, por la utilización de autores y textos diferentes. La obra consta de cinco capítulos que coinciden con las cinco partes de la retórica, siguiendo la secuencia natural de la elaboración y exposición de un discurso: inuentio, dispositio, elocutio, memoria y pronunciatio.

In spite of its misleading title, Joannes Telgius’ Progymnasmata Rhetorica Summam Totius Artis Breuiter Complectentia (Cologne 1561) is a beginner’s manual of rhetoric addressed to law students. Its main feature is the inclusion of examples from Cicero’s speeches, as the author notes, to illustrate all the aspects of this preceptive discipline; however, other sources are also identifiable. Furthermore, Telgius indicates that the main source of his rhetorical precepts is the Rhetorica ad Herennium, but again, this is not the only source since the Progymnasmata Rhetorica is characterized by its syncretism, i.e. its use of different authors and texts. This work consists of five chapters which follow the five parts of rhetoric, and, hence, the natural sequence of speech composition and delivery: inuentio, dispositio, elocutio, memoria and pronunciatio.
