Abstract: Wave climate around Canary Islands is analysed from field measurements to evaluate the wave power availability as a renewable energy resource in these small oceanic islands far away from the mainland and fully dependent on fossil fuels for generating electricity and freshwater. It is observed that available wave energy may represent a considerable contribution to the total energy demand, mainly during winter. Furthermore, it is observed that sheltering effects play a significant role on the power energy available at different sides of the islands
