dc.description.abstract | The Gulf of St. Lawrence (GSL) is a semi-enclosed sea with an estuarine circulation forced by runoff from the St. Lawrence and Great Lakes drainage systems and balanced by a deep inflow of oceanic waters through the Laurentian Channel. Based on samples collected between July 1992 and June 1994 during Phase I of the CJGOFS program conducted in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, we present new data on the carbon and nutrient chemistry as well as respiratory activity in the deep waters. Organic carbon fluxes estimated from sediment trap data, deepwater respiratory activity, and benthic respiration measurements are consistent with those obtained from the changes in the dissolved oxygen concentration of the deep waters along the Laurentian Channel. These flux estimates suggest that approximately 10% of the local primary production reaches the deep layer (>200 m) and the sediments in the GSL. The vertical carbon budget is almost balanced in the eastern part of the gulf, but approximately half of the carbon produced in the surface layer of the northwestern gulf cannot be accounted for. The difference in hydrodynamic and biological conditions prevailing in both areas may explain our observations. | en_US |
dc.description.abstract | Le golfe du Saint-Laurent (GSL) est une mer semi-fermée avec une circulation estuarienne forcée par l’écoulement issu des systèmes de draînage des grands lacs et du Saint-Laurent, et balancée par une entrée profonde d’eau océanique via le chenal Laurentien. A partir des échantillons récoltés entre juillet 1992 et juin 1994, pendant la Phase I du programme CJGOFS effectué dans le golfe Saint-Laurent, nous présentons de nouvelles données sur la chimie du carbone et des sels nutritifs ainsi que sur l’activité respiratoire dans les eaux profondes. Nous avons pu démontrer que les flux de carbone organique évalués à partir des données de pièges à sédiment, des mesures de l’activité respiratoire dans les eaux profondes et de la respiration benthique sont compatibles avec ceux obtenus à partir des changements dans la concentration en oxygène dissous des eaux profondes le long du chenal laurentien. Ces estimations suggèrent qu’environ 10% de la production primaire locale atteint les eaux profondes (>200 m) et les sédiments du GSL. Le bilan vertical de carbone est presque équilibré dans la partie est du golfe, mais approximativement la moitié du carbone produit dans la couche de surface du nord-ouest du golfe n’est pas prise en compte par notre modèle.
