Abstract: Treatment of osteoporosis begins with nonpharmacologic measures, such as the need for physical activity daily, according to the health status of each patient, make a balanced and healthy diet with high intake of dairy products, avoid toxic habits like snuff and moderate alcohol consumption. It is also advisable to take at least 10 minutes of sun avoiding peak sunlight hours and develop a plan for the prevention of falls. There are a number of drugs that reduce the risk of fracture, but all are not equal, either in efficacy or in the form of administration or side effects. It is advisable to elaborate a long-term, multi-year, according to the clinical situation of each patient. In all cases it is advisable to supplement with calcium and Vitamin D. © 2014 Elsevier España, S.L.
