Wind turbines can be used to supply electricity or mechanical power to desalination plants for the desalination of brackish water or seawater. Within the last century, with the installation of wind farms, wind energy has been mainly used for grid-connected applications with the purpose of selling electricity to the grid. However, in developing countries, and in some areas of developed countries, the use of wind turbines seems to have been more valuable to human life than just an investment for economic benefits. In rural and remote areas, the use of small wind turbines in mini-grids or stand-alone (off-grid) applications is essential for the improvement of inhabitants’ lives and their socioeconomic development. Furthermore, the provision of electricity through renewable energy sources can replace the use of diesel generators, kerosene lamps, etc. and reduce environmental impacts, while also providing an affordable and sustainable solution.en_US
