Abstract: The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a Very High Frequency (VHF) radio broadcasting system frequencies (161.975 MHz and 162.025 MHz) that transfers packets of data over the data link (HDLC) [1, 2] and enables AIS-equipment vessels and shore-based stations to send and receive identification information that can be displayed on a computer. It was originally conceived as a navigational aid for ship monitoring and collision avoidance at sea that over time, has evolved into a system with a multitude of additional applications, including experimental systems in academic and research environments.
