Los autores postmodernos rechazan escribir sobre el pasado como se ha contado hasta ahora, tomando un papel activo para cuestionar e interrogar al propio pasado histórico. Patrick Süskind ofrece en su obra Das Parfum. Die Geschichte eines Mörders una forma de novela histórica que reproduce un tratamiento distinto de la Historia dentro de un texto de ficción.
